The Mental Pause!

Can one moment destroy a life?

A book by Rusty Bernard.
Not her real name but then...
to her nothing was real!
It was all pretend!

As she looked down at the flower girl handing over the horseshoe she wished it was her.  She wanted to tear the girl's heart out and eat it to try and feel what it was like to be pretty with flowers in your hair.

One taste of it would be enough.  A moment in time to feel special and wanted.

Her head started to spin with hatred.  Like a top spinning out of control she felt the rage within overwhelm and consume her!

That might be how it began.  The madness and the spiraling out of control!

Till suddenly everything stopped and she shut down completely!

Kind Kastriot!

On what has been a very challenging week for my neighbour Jane there was some lightheartedness  and kindness on Friday that will stay with her for a long time.

She had not eaten for two days and when I went to pick her up from visiting her mother in hospital.  It was late when I phoned Kastriot's and on what was a very busy night, they very kindly fitted us in.

On arrival they had a table ready and knew the situation and were so kind to my friend that we were both quite emotional.  We were quickly served with an amazing Focaccia which The Mary would have rated 10/10!  The service was kind and discreet and Jane devoured her Lamb dish which was as usual delicious.

When it was time to pay the bill, i asked but nothing was brought to the table.

How very kind!

Jane hugged The Gjini so tight I thought he would suffocate.  This memory will make a very difficult time in her life easier to bear knowing there is such kindness out there.

I'm not sure if it's too late to vote but if you haven't yet done so, get on it for Kastriot's because in my mind they are the winners in every respect.

See you the next time.
Me and The Mary.

Chettinad Cuisine!

Indian is my favourite food but I never cook it because of the complexity and the numerous ingredients involved.  The last time I tried it cost me about £150 and it wisnae very good.  So, rather than do that I go to Nakodar where I am going on Wednesday for a mini book signing for my new Book; Available on Amazon.
The Mental Pause -Memoirs of a Gorbal's Girl

Recently though, I met a lovely man called Kartik from Chettinad in Southern India who has a new concept which helps guide us philistines through the long and spicy road of curry making.

I tried his recipe today and it tastes so delicious and authentic that Jonnie Nakodar better watch out because I might be opening near him soon!

Chettinad – a region in South India named after the chettiars – who are seafarers trading spices and other produce from south India.  Due to their large links with south east Asia – they bought in many spices from these parts of the world and blended in their cooking. Traditional Chettinad cooking is very rich and use as many as 15-20 different spice varieties carefully blended to give an aromatic smell and a taste which you will never forget.

Chettinad cuisine is very rich in spices and flavour but mild in hotness when compared to other Indian cuisine.

Cooking Chettinad curry is very difficult even for a trained Indian chef, to make life easier Katrick and his family are blending spices in unique order so even an amateur can cook this beautiful curry without compromising its taste and aroma.

Mixing spices in one go is hellish when cooking – they don’t mix like you think. Adding different spices at different stages ensures the rich taste and seals all its aroma, that’s exactly what they do – in every box there will be 3-5 spice mix sachets – all you have to do is add these sachets to your curry when told and in the end, you will make a curry that is better than most of your local Indian restaurant curries.

I swear to the b’Jesus that if I can do it then anyone can!

They source spices from deep forest in the Western Ghats of southern India. Almost All of their spices are grown in deep forest by local tribes who only natural methods and do not use any chemicals.

Since they are tribes they don’t disturb the wild in any case and have direct contact with them ensuring a fair play during the trade creating jobs and sustain livelihood for the local community.

By doing this the aim to stop the young from being pulled into poaching and other illegal activities. Since these spices are wild and not processed in industry they retain all the essential oils keeping the flavour of your curry as rich as possible. They also employ economically local women who use manual and traditional methods to grind these spices.

If anyone is interested in obtaining packs or more in formation about this fabulous concept you can contact Kartick at:

Or we can arrange a cooking evening at mine and have a Chat ‘n That!

In the meantime, I’m trying to get him to move in with me and help me start my herb garden as soon as possible.  The smell in my wee hoose as I am writing this makes me think I’m there in the forrest.  I can actually smell vetiver and bark.

I've just eaten the curry and I thought I had been transported to my favourite Indian Grill in Dennistoun.

See you the next time!

La Lanterna!

Love, loss, politics and the Pope!

Last night I spent an enlightened evening with two amazingly compassionate, progressive thinking ladies sharing intellect with reason and individualism.  With me in the mix and all three of us hoping to share a point of view, with conviction, there was never a hint of silence.

I first met Anne Marie Coccozza when I was approached to be involved in FFAMS – Families Friends Against Murder and Suicide.  This is a registered charity based in Scotland specialising in supporting those left behind after the tragic death of a love one through murder or suicide.  This is a cause very close to me and my family.

Ann Marie is passionate about reaching out to anyone in need of relief, support or comfort and is willing to help any way possible.  This could be to listen, talk or simply to be with others in a similar situation.  The mission of FFAMS is to operate a grass roots Befrienders' service offering free, peer support and confidential advice to anyone in need of it!

If you are interested in being involved with this charity, then have a look at the website on their Facebook page to see how you could help or be supported!

Then there's Ann Marie Di Mambro, a prolific, Scottish writer and Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University whom, I don’t mind saying, I am in awe of.  Ann Marie gave up teaching to concentrate on her writing for theatre and her plays have been performed in Scotland’s theatres for many years.  On a professional level her work is integral in the delivery of both my Higher and National 5 levels  when working towards SQA examinations.   I also use them in my approach to teachings drama and production skills for ACfE.

Ann Marie writes for television and has had major input for programs such as EastEnders, River City, Casualty, Taggart, Holby City and many more.  She is very fabulous!

Over the course of the evening we discussed men, (that lasted about two minutes) politics, I didn’t express any views on this as I felt a bit lacking in the extraordinary level of knowledge these two beauties expressed.  So, I was quiet for a change.   The evening flew past but I was left with a sense of purpose and a new perspective on my recent past.

In our lives, everyone we meet and everything that happens to us is for a reason.  Although at times we feel weak and sad, any experience, good or bad make us stronger for the future.  That future is today.  The past doesn’t matter and we can’t see what’s ahead.  As George Harrison said, “Time is s very misleading thing.”

If we absorb ourselves in the past or are always yearning and hoping for what might be then we are missing so much in the present moment.

Having said that, my mind keeps flipping back to last night and the fun we had while eating in the best Italian Restaurant in Scotland (three years in a row).  I don’t need to discuss the food because it was, without question as delicious as ever.  The staff were attentive and friendly, Megan with her understated professionalism and Maritna with her charismatic smile and charm.

Congratulations again to Luca and Chris to all they have achieved this year.  Vote for them in The Scottish Entertainment Awards.

I live my life in a truthful way and believe if we are all honest and true to ourselves then we will be open to new ideas.  In doing this we will gain a willingness to accept people for who they are and live a healthier and happier life.

“If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.”

So, from three Brave hearted and courageous Scottish/Italian women, thank you for a lovely evening.  We will be back but in the meantime, we will each, in our own, small way try to make a difference in someone’s life.

Ci Vediamo la prossima volta!
