Food Fight!

So, The Mary came out to the car wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson!

I didn’t even ask.

We were going to Kastriot’s in Baillieston and taking my lovely, wee neighbours for their birthdays.  I was so glad when they chose this fabulous place as it's one of my favourites.  They'd even checked out the menu online the night before and knew exactly what they were going to have to eat.  They were so excited I felt quite humbled and emotional.

Sometimes we don’t appreciate how lucky we are and this meant so much to them!

The Mary was also very pleased because when we take them out she does her version of Carpool Karaoke and choose to give us a couple of country numbers.  Hence the fancy dress.  Her first number was ‘Blue Ain’t your Colour’ by Keith Urban and someone should have maybe pointed this out to her before she left the house because she was top to toe in denim.  She might have gotten away with it but for the diamante and colourful embroidery.

Roll a Silver Dollar had me in tears and I had to stop the car because she gives such a good rendition but has to do the actions in order to remember the words.  So there we were, on Tollcross Road with The Mary entertaining us on the pavement.  Traffic stopper that was and on the way to Kastriot’s we heard it on the news at Smooth radio!

“Calamity Jane spotted in The East End of Glasgow.”

Award Winners!
Not sure what for in this picture but they were the best and that's all that matters!

Kastriot met us at the door and has the loveliest manner and smile which makes you feel immediately welcome and relaxed.  The lighting seemed different from the last time I was in and I’m not sure how or why but The Mary looked much better in the dimmer, more atmospheric, lighting.

Thank the lord, because her sequins were giving me a migraine.

The four of us had Lamb dishes.  I don’t know anywhere else that does this style of slow, cooked melt in your mouth, meat.  The Foccaccia was crisp and tasty and The Mary was raging when Jane helped herself to, not one but, two bits and I thought to myself The Mary's “gonna get her guns oot in a minute if we don’t order another”.

At that, very, tense moment, Kastriot - The Lone Waiter, galloped up with an amazing Pitta with Tzatziki.

Thank goodness for him saving the day or it would have been like the food fight at the OK Corral.

On the subject of Food Fights.  As we were eating dinner I had a bit of discomfort in my middle.  I‘d eaten so much food over the weekend there hardly enough room for anything else.  I was in trouble unless something gave way.  The Fabulous CorinthianAfternoon Tea  I'd had with Helen had only just departed to make way for Guy’s Roast Beef Dinner which was currently on its way out.

Kastriot’s lamb was trying to make its way down and there was a skirmish going on in my newly formed spread.

Guy's Roast beef Dinner!

I’ll be glad to go on holiday because I find it challenging to eat in the heat and love to swim in the sea to keep cool.  So, while most people put on weight at this time, I actually lose it along with my dignity.   Because of the high temperatures I'm often found, lying in a heap, at the side of the road, in a pool of my own sick.  My daughter can attest this and stated last year that she’s “never had such a pure riddy” in her “entire life” which is amazing, her being 34 and having me for a mum.

“So if you are looking for places to eat in Baillieston, Glasgow, you should head to Kastriot's Mediterranean Bar & Grill today. It is one of the best places to eat Mediterranean food in Glasgow.”
Kastriot

I’ll be in the Med soon and I’ll let you know if I find anything better than Baillieston’s finest, luscious, lamb.

Work those abs....!

See y’all abroad!

Glasgow Girl Select!

Glasgow Girl Select Pizza!

Last week, just by chance, I met a charming man called Jules in Troon and this week we are related through Pizza.  We got chatting and released we had both been at an awards thing in November.  Although we hadn't been introduced, he remembered me.

We chatted about food and pizza in particular and I had an idea which he supported and went along with.  This week he named a Pizza after me.  The result is 'The Glasgow Girl Select' and it's caused hit after hit for both myself an the fabulous Dough in Troon!

The idea is; I suggest a topping and they will try it out as 'The Glasgow Girl Select'.
If it's a hit, it goes on the regular Menu!

Once Upon a Time - Here is their Story!

"It all began when we decided there had to be a better way. So after 2 years of Skype calls between Sydney-Tokyo-Glasgow-Melbourne-Toronto, Dough Gourmet Pizza was born.
Our intention was to create a new style of pizza, totally different to the rest. Our pizza would be one where the toppings spoke their own language and where each pizza was prepared with love in front of the customer.
We would demand absolute freshness, zero preservatives and no additives. We would take away all the guilt from enjoying pizza -- even for customers with kids. We would create something that was indisputably the tastiest and freshest in the pizza universe. And that’s how the Dough Gourmet Pizza came about.
Brothers Adriano and Giuliano Matteoni, and Jacqui Lau have created pizzas we know you'll love. And with service as fresh as our ingredients, we know you'll keep coming back."

Bella Fresca!

So, I was feeling right, Bella Fresca when I went to pick up The Mary and I sensed she was a bit anxious.  I’d been to Troon at the weekend and told her we were going a bit further out of town.  She thought we were going to the seaside and was getting separation anxiety.  I thought this concerned the kids but it was the opposite.  The nuggets were with their fabulous Auntie and Uncle Nugent and she didn’t want to be too far away from her bed.

I assured her we were only going to the West End of Paisley but nevertheless still didn’t trust me and insisted we didn’t go on the motorway because she was convinced I was trying to ‘grannynap’ her and take her ‘down the coast’.

Paisley can be a bit full of herself and sometimes needs to be put in her place.  She would love to be a city but is still a town, albeit a great town…a town she still is.

Famous for her swirly pattern, Abbey and textiles it has a rich history, with some very famous landmarks including; The Paisley Thread Mill and The Dooslan Stane which, in the past, was used was a soapbox.  Maybe I should go to Brodie Park and stand on it ranting about Paisley not being a city!

One of my very good Friends was married in Paisley Abby and I would say the ownership of that beautiful, neo-classical style building would cause me to give the finger to anyone who said Paisley was not a force to be reckoned with.

Paisley you are affiliated with the City of Glasgow and what could be better than that so be patient, your day will come?

Paisley...You are fabulous the way you are!

Besides the great variety of shops and retail opportunities, including the Piazza and shopping centre, there are some great restaurants in the town and The Mary and I stop at the first one which appealled to us on Paisley Road West.

Bella Fresca is an Italian Delicatessen established in 1997 by Antonio Colella and Lucio Celino and yes, related to the wonderful Celino’s on Alexandra Parade on the Upper East Side of Glasgow.  A very Talented and hardworking family!

See previous blog! Celino's - Then and Now!

They have something on offer for everyone; from Italian cured, cooked meats, breads, cheeses, beers, wines, spirits, filled rolls, homemade pasta dishes, pizza, panini, arancine and even the most delicious take away coffee.  Not sure which coffee it was though but I’m sure it wasn’t my favourite Aroma.

Aroma Italian Coffee I know Aroma when I taste it!

I had the most delicious pasta with prawns, garlic, chilli and they had thrown fresh, peppery rocket on top and that, my friends, is one of my favourite things.  The Mary assured me that the focaccia was brilliant and we discussed this for ages because we/she usually like a really fine crispy one but this was thicker but very tasty and still crispy all they way from the middle to the edge.

The Mary had her usual Carbonara.  She really needs to widen her palette.  You see, because she doesn’t get out much she’s scared to try anything different in case she’s disappointed and will be greetin’ all the way home.  I cannae go that so don’t encourage her too much I mean, we can’t have my night spoiled can we?  I normally stay in two nights a week and don’t want to spend one of them regretting a single moment of my very precious time!

I'm a bit like Paisley and it's all about me tonight.  Need to get home before I start to feel too full of myself like a proper, paisley burd!  No offence Helen, Elizabeth and all my other dear friends from Paisley you have fought to be townies and I have been privileged to help you on that journey!

Lucio and Antonio will continue to meet the needs of their customer though listening to them, trying new dishes and adapting to change in order to stay ahead of the game.  I might try their other place next time and look forward to it with Gusto and will remain Bella Fresca till my next visit to Paisley’s Café Royale!

See you the next time!
